The City of Surin

Surin, home to the annual Surin Elephant Round-up, is the capital of the Surin province in northeastern Thailand. The city is located 50 km (31 miles) north of the Cambodian border and 450 km (280 miles) east of Bangkok.

Surin is a relatively small town and home to approximately 40,000 people. Much of the city can be seen by foot but there are also tuk-tuks and samlors available for around 30-90 baht ($1-$3 US) per trip.

 

Tourist Attractions in Surin

 

The Surin Elephant Round-Up – This 3-day festival takes place in November and is popular with Thais and foreigners alike. Hotels fill up quickly so book well in advance. Elephants can be found wandering around town as well as participating in beauty contests, soccer games, and other performances.

Surin National Museum – Situated approximately 4km south of city center, this museum features exhibits about the history, geography, and people of Surin.

Phraya Surin Phakdi Si Narong Changwang (Pum) Monument – Constructed in 1968 on the south side of the city, this monument honors the city’s first ruler.

Buddhist Temples – The city of Surin and the surrounding province are home to many Buddhist temples including Prom Sutthawas Temple and Wat Thep Surin, the latter of which is home to a Royal Crematorium built during the time of King Rama V.

City Pillar Shrine – This sacred shrine is an icon of the city and located just 500 meters west of Surin City Hall, on Lak Mueang Road. The actual pillar was not constructed until 1968.

Ban Ta Klang Elephant Village – North of Surin city, the village of Kui has been home to elephants for hundreds of years. Elephant rides are available year round.

Phanom Sawai Forest Park – Located 22 km outside the city, this park is comprised of three peaks surrounded by lush forest. The park contains a large meditating Buddha image, several medium-sized Buddha images, and a pavilion with Buddha’s Footprint.

Khmer Ruins – Several Khmer-era temples and palace complexes can be found near Surin. Prasat Ta Meuan and Prasat Hin Phluang are near the Cambodian border and reachable by private transport. Prasat Sikhoraphum is about 30 km outside the city, and can be reached by both bus and train in about 1 hour.
